Description

Buyers often ask which material we recommend for their crusher liners. The answer depends on three properties of your feed: hardness, impact energy and abrasiveness. Choosing the wrong grade usually does not cause failure - it just leaves money on the table through shorter life or paying for alloy you do not need.

The work-hardening principle

Hadfield manganese steel is unique: it starts relatively soft (HB 200-260) but transforms to 500+ HB at the surface under repeated impact, while the core stays tough. This is why manganese liners survive impact that would shatter hardened steel. The higher the carbon and alloy content (Mn18Cr2, Mn22Cr2), the faster and deeper this hardening - but only if there is enough impact to drive it.

Two rules of thumb from our casting experience:

  1. Big feed boulders → more manganese. Impact energy scales with feed size. Primary stages justify Mn22Cr2; tertiary stages rarely do.
  2. Grinding abrasion without impact → chrome, not manganese. If liners wear smooth with little work-hardening (sand making, fine chambers), high chrome iron or ceramic-composite designs outperform any manganese grade.

Ceramic-insert composites for extreme abrasion

For the most abrasive circuits we also produce ceramic-composite liners - Mn18Cr2 or Mn22Cr2 embedded with tungsten carbide or ceramic particles at the wearing zones. These cost more per piece but can double life in silica-rich ores; the economics work whenever changeout downtime dominates your cost.
