A South American copper mine replaced original Metso HP500 liners with Qirun Mn18Cr2 mantles and concaves. Service life went from 3 months to 4.5 months - 50% longer, with lower cost per ton.
A copper mine in South America was changing the mantle and concave on its Metso HP500 cone crusher every 3 months. The ore is highly abrasive copper porphyry, and the original liners were the single largest source of unplanned downtime in the crushing circuit.
Original liners lasted only 3 months in this application. Each changeout meant 1-2 days of stopped production, and the wear pattern showed early loss of profile on the concave packing zone - the liners were work-hardening too slowly for the feed conditions.
We proposed Mn18Cr2 (18% manganese with 1.5-2.0% chromium) instead of the standard Mn13Cr2 the mine had been using. Higher carbon and chromium content gives a slower initial wear rate in abrasive feed, and the alloy work-hardens to 500+ HB at the wearing surface under impact.
Before casting, we confirmed the liner profile against the customer’s used original liners - dimensions, bolt holes and seating area were checked drawing by drawing. The parts were cast, heat treated and machined in 22 days, and shipped with a Material Test Report (MTR) covering chemical composition and mechanical properties.
| Metric | Original liners | Qirun Mn18Cr2 liners |
|---|---|---|
| Service life | 3 months | 4.5 months |
| Changeouts per year | 4 | 2-3 |
| Cost per ton crushed | baseline | ~20% lower |
The mine has since moved its HP500 liner supply to Qirun on a rolling schedule, ordering two sets per changeout cycle to keep one set on site.
The same Mn18Cr2 material is available for the full Metso HP and GP series (HP200 to HP800, GP100 to GP550), Sandvik CH/CS series, and Symons 2FT-7FT cone crushers. Standard lead time is 15-30 days; sample orders from 1 piece are accepted.

| Material | Initial Hardness | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Mn13 (ASTM A128) | HB 200-230 | General crushing with medium impact |
| Mn13Cr2 | HB 210-240 | Standard jaw plates and cone liners |
| Mn18Cr2 | HB 220-250 | High-impact, abrasive feed |
| Mn22Cr2 | HB 230-260 | Severe impact, hard and large rock |
| High Chrome Cr26 | HRC 58-62 | Blow bars, fine crushing of abrasive material |
* High manganese steel work-hardens under impact to 500+ HB at the wearing surface, giving long life in hard-rock crushing.
